How to Prepare for a Family Session

Family sessions are so much fun, I love capturing families in a natural unposed way with laughter and connection.

Here are a few tips on how you can prepare for this session.

All of my family sessions are held outdoors, I adore the seasonal and landscape element that adds to capturing this moment, and if young children are involved then it gives them space to have fun and explore, capturing natural interactions for the family.  I love to photograph family sessions in the hour before sunset for gorgeous soft light, being later in the afternoon/evening with young children can be tricky if they are tired so please let me know if the timing is suitable for your family.

I have a few locations that I use regularly including an overgrown orchard in Waimauku, a rolling hill paddock with long grass in Hobsonville, and the wild west coast beaches of Muriwai and Bethells.  If you have any ideas or locations you would like to use just let me know, I am always up for finding a new spot and absolutely love any location that is wild and overgrown with a rustic feel.

Prepare to have an early dinner so everyone is happy and well fed.  Have easy snacks and drink bottles on hand for afterwards and non-messy treats like marshmallows can be a great idea for during the session especially if children are young and need encouragement.

Photoshoot date

When booking we choose a date and monitor the weather forecast, if we have to reschedule on the day due to bad weather we just keep booking in the next available day until we get fine weather.

What to wear

Dress your family members being involved in the session in neutrals tones if possible, avoiding bright colours, heavy stripes, logos, pictures or words on clothing.  There is no need to be in formal wear or have family in matching colours, just tones and styles that compliment each other and take the season into account. Darker or earthy hues suit autumn and winter, and lighter fresh pastels for spring and summer.

Clean, neutral coloured nails avoiding any bright or neon coloured nail polish is best.  Hair is best pinned or clipped back to prevent it covering the face in side profile images and make up (if worn) can be slightly heavier that normal as this photographs well.  Some clients choose to get this done professionally with a hair and make up artist or at a retail cosmetic counter.

Most importantly, relax on the day of your session.  Talk to your children about having some family photos taken and get them excited be part of this fun family adventure, they will love it!
